We had a class like that in High School called "Music Appreciation". The teacher was a partier and he would have us do some sort of actual learning exercise the first 10-15 minutes of class and then he would let someone play music for the rest of class. There was a closet filled with albums of all sorts and you could pick whatever you wanted, or take requests.
Most of my friends took that class right away in 10th or 11th grade. I saved it for my senior year as an easy class with an easy credit. For some reason, I would get picked to play music a majority of the time, and even when the teacher would pick other people, they would give me their turn. You could bring in your albums from home too and play those in class, and most of the people would have me play them like I was the class dj or something. It was definitely a fun class to have in my sr. year.
We're talking 1982, so the standard school uniform for metal heads was a concert shirt, jeans, leather jacket.....and high tops. There were plenty of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden shirts to round out my uniform. Good times for sure.
