HP Tuners MPVI2 versus DiabloSport Trinity

Wow bricking a locked ECM, that's a new one. I used a Trinity on my old Challenger (it's all we had) and had lots of problems. I ended up having to use a Predator to load tunes and the Trinity to data log. It sucked. The one thing I did like is it's small form factor attached to the windshield and I could hit "record log" right before a run easily. If HPT comes out with an interface like that it'll be perfect in my opinion. Having the laptop in the car isn't a huge deal, I've got a small one, but would rather something the size of a phone instead.

Software wise it's night and day difference. HPTuners is awesome. They also give back to the community and sponsor ChallengerFest each year so there's that too. I begged Diablo for years and they wouldn't even respond.

I have the "Pro" version so I'll try it out, but reading the doc it's a bit complicated unless you want to rely on the button press to start the log. Then "hope" it's actually recording. Log data, particularly at the track, is extremely important to me. I'd prefer some kind of visual device I can look at to know it's recording a log. These devices have blue tooth, so having an app with a simple interface shouldn't be a huge deal I wouldn't think. I did try data logging through blue tooth and it didn't work well. I guess it's too much data and overwhelms the BT bit rate.

You should be able to set up certain perimeters to be met and the device starts auto logging. I haven’t played with that feature myself but I’ve seen it done!

While I haven't tried it yet, my plan is to use and extension cable to get the MPVI2 up somewhere where I can actually see the button and the lights. Then use the button press and the light confirmation?

What I haven't worked out is the location and the cable routing.

One thought is a shorter cable and 3M Command strips. I've used them in the past to temporarily mount my Hero cameras in various places.

I will throw my $0.05 worth of free advice in too .

Diablo sport software is ridiculously expensive especially for a individual or small shop .
Downloading tunes into a handheld then into the car is a PITA. data logging is a PITA . And from the little I used it the software was a PITA. I like nothing about Diablo sport . I have also used SCT and it's not much better but at least it's more reasonably priced .

HpTuners is leaps and bounds ahead of them in all aspects .

I bit the bullet, and took the plunge, ordering the HP MPVI2 (non-pro version) to start off with. Not planning on doing tuning myself for quite a while, but having had some glitch experiences with the old Trinity, not wanting to go down that rabbit hole again.

Will say I've read enough elsewhere to convince me not to use the HP security bypass for 2018+ cars though; seems there is some compatibility issues where not all HP functions operate smoothly through it. Went with the ZAutomotive OBDII bypass mounted in the trunk. Those that experienced the HP issues found the ZA route solved them with no access issues into or out of the HP software.

Ive used several of the HPtuners bypass cables with zero issues. Probably 50+

I have a love hate with both products. 1.) HP Tuners nickel and dimes you for everything. Credits/Pro Features/Stand Alone logging... meh it's their business model so I have to play ball. 2.) CMR for the diablo products is not available to the regular joe schmoe. Have to be a business entity etc... and a really big fee.

Either way it's not the product itself but the Tuner behind the interface that matters. However after using HP Tuners UI, I could not go to anything else at this point.
