Start em young and they will be fine. Problem is many adults never learned this. So you have entitled kids raising entitled kids.

I've had this conversation with so many young parents:
THEM: "My parents were so mean...I swore I'd never be like that to my kids...I want to give them all the things I never had"
ME: "I don't blame you, look how you turned out"
THEM: "What are talking about, I turned out fine"
ME: "And you don't think how you were raised had anything to do with that?"

There are two sides. I’ve seen kids turn out to be productive as hell. And I’ve seen them end up dead or in prison for far worse than justifiable by strict parents.

So historically the decision to not work results in poverty. Once that reality is reestablished people are going to sober up.

I heard one comic do a routine about how many younger people have been raised in relative luxury, and as a result think about their own recreational desires ahead of their employment. He talked about how a small company owner got a big manufacturing order mid-week - and he told his employees about how he'd need some help on Saturday to fulfill the order. The response was along the lines of, "I've got a date.", or "Going to the amusement park", so, "No, thanks."

And the comic's punch line was that the company owner should have said something like, "You don't understand. When you come here and work hard and do a great job that just means I'm prepared to let you come back here tomorrow and do another great job. That is your reality."

I'm not advocating a return to draconian turn of the century unfettered capitalism where workers were little more than economic slaves, but working for a living should offer its own rewards. Psychological as well as physical.

The whole loyal worker and the company will be loyal to you contract went out the window a long time ago. Workers have responded in predictable fashion, they aren't loyal because they know employers will terminate them at need and without hesitation.

A bit of both? My dealer still makes appointments and caters to my OCD. However, my wife is the chair on the board of a non-profit child care facility. Six local child cares have had to close because they can’t get workers. Her’s is still open and has a long waiting list, but can’t accept new students for the same reason and could have to close. People don’t want to work.

That's a sad commentary...for years all we heard was...WE NEED JOBS !!!!...guess we really didn't need them after all...the flushing of America..really sad...

The whole loyal worker and the company will be loyal to you contract went out the window a long time ago. Workers have responded in predictable fashion, they aren't loyal because they know employers will terminate them at need and without hesitation.

That's a dynamic that I have experienced on both sides..I employ roughly 50 people (not entry level jobs)..There is a limit as to the compensation I can offer..and if the economic climate dictates..a limit to the number of employees I can retain...yet I have witnessed acquisitions by fortune 500 companies of smaller companies that trim employees just to augment the bottom line..I treat my people well, and pay them well...but if the situation arises where the the viability of my business depends on cutting staff...those are the tough decisions I must make as an owner...

I got an offer from an old employer that was a hard-to-pass offer. If I was still in Ohio, I would’ve hopped on it in a heartbeat.

All these companies offering lump sum hire-on bonuses and doing nothing for the guys who have worked through this nonsense. I very well could have stayed on unemployment. But I wanted to work. I fought to work. And now you’ve got these people getting hired on making more, causing the employees to quit. Why would I wanna work somewhere that capped me at what is now STARTING PAY?

I myself have been looking for another job after a disagreement I had with my current boss. And I rarely take offense to something in the workplace, but these two incidents have me questioning why I'm doing what I do.

Best thing to do would be take the knowledge that you learned running a store for someone else, quit, and open your own store. Then the money you work hard to earn is all yours. I couldn't imagine not being self employed for the most part. Yes I do also have a contract job I work at, but the work is fun, and the pay is ridiculously good. If they were only going to pay me say a mere $50/hour, I wouldn't so it. I work 3 weeks out of every 8, and make 10 times what most people do working full time.

Well if the research is self-reporting, it's easier to to say it's a self-actualization quest than to say I can make ends meet by staying home. The list of jobs that Americans won't do has grown enormously post COVID.

I’ve been debating finding a new job. I can’t quite see myself opening a store myself. It just doesn’t quite fit what I feel would be best for me in my current place of life. Maybe eventually down the line. But for now, it’s a bit too much to be thinking about.

I hired a new lady last Sunday to work with horses and riders, she is only making $22/hour plus a free place to live for now, but once her probation period is up she jumps to $30 plus a free place to live. Automatic annual raises, no need to come ask me for any raises.

I was the eternal "team player". Need me to work late....sure, I'll stay. Need me to work this weekend......sure, I'll come in. Need me to keep traveling to help the company.....sure, I'll go.

Yet, when the company had a hiccup in finances, all the extra that I gave didn't stop me from getting laid off just like the folks who were 8 for 8 and out the gate. And when I would bring up all of my extra "team player" effort and sacrifice for the company, those same companies had no problem responding, "well, you got paid for all that OT right?". They had no problem boiling me and my efforts down to dollars and cents.

Companies like that, and their corporate bean counters ruined people like me. They instilled that my value was all monetary to them in the end. They shouldn't be upset when some of their workers respond in kind.

The younger generations have watched time and again how their parents, relatives, and friends have been cast aside by companies when the stock price dips .02, yet give millions of dollars in golden parachutes to corporate execs who have embezzled, or run said companies into the ground, and they don't want to go down that road. Who can blame them. Corporate America has shown very little loyalty to it's workers, so they shouldn't expect anything different in return.

I'm an old codger with a few years left to work, but will be glad when my time comes to retire.

For me, my employees are a lot more than a number, I know a lot about them, they get a homemade by me birthday cake on every birthday, when they need a hug I am here for them, 9 live on my property in staff housing, and they are friends. My new hire has been working here a week, and says it is the best job she ever had, and she hopes to still be here in 30 years when ready to retire.

If indeed that is the case...and holds true throughout the company where managers earn the same rate as hourly workers...its time to look for another job...
