So if you're like me, and you're changing your pads every other day for a variety if reasons (testing, track days or even just for low-dust), it can be a PITA to strip your calipers down without nicking your powder coat when removing the pins.

I've long envisioned a drift pin that had a matching conical recess in it, and was also a bit longer than the typical drift pin or punch. This would allow you to knock the caliper pins out without worrying so much about slipping off of the pin

So this past weekend I got myself a set of long punches, and modified the 3/16th
(.1875") punch. (The front Brembo caliper pins are 6mm (.2362"))

Punches are usually pretty hard, so modifying them can be challenging, fortunately the set I bought wasn't super hard, so I was able to drill them successfully with 135° cobalt split-point bits. (Very low rpm!) I used both a 5/32nd and 9/64th bit, to produce a stepped feature that closely matched the conical nature of the caliper pin. Keeping the drill-spot precisely centered is important! Take your time.

So when you put this punch on the caliper pin, it "grabs" the pin!

I took a finish nail punch and turned it down to the correct size, I didn't need to buy another tool. served the same purpose

Nice @BULL . I've seen a super over priced punch with a similar feature. Are you running a Prime Day deal?

It really didn't take too much time, but S/H is going to be tough ;)

I bought one a few years ago, it was to be titanium. The problem is after a few pins, the edges mushroom. Then you will need to file the end off because when it gets mushroomed enough it sticks and is difficult to remove from the caliper after you punch it through.

Today I did figure out a better way to punch the front pins back in from the inside. I simply used the middle screw/bolt. It is wide, sturdy, handy and short so that a small hammer can smack it. It did not move around and worked quite well. I was able to drift the front pins back in more easy. Since the fronts don’t go into the caliper like the rears, nothing is hurt doing this. I just turned the bolt a few turns into the screw so nothing was damaged either.

Nice job, there is for sure a market for this! I usually use torx bit with the security hole. This is great.

I just nick the powder coat right away so I never have to worry about it again.

I'm at a point where I want to replace my entire caliper... ...and it only has small, barely visible nicks in it.

I use a small spring punch to hit the pins back in. With the Viper calipers the pins also recess into the caliper from the rear. I still use a hammer and punch when there is room, but in the rear I don't have room to swing a hammer.

Everyone wants to talk about different handy items?

My favorite for getting around anything and using to punch the pins through initially in order to release the springs. Old punch that fell to bending years ago and now has risen to one of my favorites for this and sometimes the AAD hole line-up feat.

Price seems ridiculous, but I bought it 5 years ago and can’t remember what I paid.

@jroyk I bought one for $30 a few years ago, the end of it mushrooms out. I think it was represented to be titanium. Doubt it! Typical cynize chit. I have filed it many times. That is why I like my trusty old bent punch.
