I believe there is a typo on the official page for the contest...

"14" should be "144"???




I'm also finding an issue with the "distance to terminal velocity", but perhaps I have an error in my calcs.

Yeah, if you look at the screen shot from OBC it shows 144.

Well now, numerically, there isn't much ambiguity in the math this time. There aren't any factors that aren't supplied.


So you would THINK that you would find an exact answer, would you not???

You know this all reminds me so much of the kids I left behind at my old employer.

The older employees generally had a work ethic that leaned towards testing things out thoroughly before putting something in to the production environment.
However, the younger kids consistently would just toss things in to the production environment with gaping holes in it because of a lack of testing and attention the details.
If it stuck, great. If it failed, oh well. Try again...

What ever happened to, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right? AND... it takes as long to do something right as it does to do it wrong...

Thanks for pointing out the 144 vs 14. I took a screen shot that had the 14 and knew something didn't seem right.
I haven't put too much thought into the calc yet, but some things are shown in feet and some in inches, so do we need to convert all the given inches to ft.

It looks like this question does not take into account the total distance the driving car has to cover because of the length of the car driving or the width or length of the falling car depending on the direction it is facing. This is assuming the driving car passes through the landing spot instead of to the side.

Myself and few of the other "old coots" were having a very similar conversation today about a very similar situation at work...and we all came to the conclusion that we have 10 more years to work...and that we're all gonna retire as soon as we can...and that our bosses don't care what we tell them, because according to our bosses, this project will launch on Dec. 9, no matter what. Makes me think of the old adage that there's never enough time to do it right the first time, but there's always time to do it over.
