I've also been looking at dash cams. I have a V1 radar detector powered by a mirror tap on a blend mount currently installed. I only have the detector mounted on road trips though (so rarely.) So I went looking for cams that could be powered by the 12V RJ11 wire available for the V1. Only found the Escort M1 cam. Interesting because it looks like it could be used along with the V1 (instead of an Escort RD.) It has pass through RJ11 power. This would eliminate any further hard wiring and a mounting option for the blend mount is available. Its also very small. Negative is its on the expensive side and not a very well featured cam. Also might be pushing the power capability of a mirror tap when used along with the radar detector.
I believe the USB type power plug on most dash cams is USB voltage/amperage and the power control is built into the plug (cig. lighter power). I think I read somewhere that it takes 12v to 5v...so just make sure the camera can accept the 12v from the mirror tap.

Nice video. Can the mic be turned off? I tend to think out loud....and by that I mean "instantaneous venting"....cuz it helps keep the blood pressure down when I'm interacting with the motoring public, especially in my area where they seem to think putting on their turn signal and jamming their fender in front of you gives them the right of way......
If I posted a video like this I'd probably have a lot of bleeps in it...or have to spend a lot of time putting them in ;)
I believe so

Feel the same way. I'm sure my videos would be laced with complimentary comments making it more of a documentary film.
...or maybe even classified as an "instructional video" :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I have a Garmin Dashcam 55 in my DD truck. Records in 1440p, shows location and speed in video, turns on/off automatically with power, and over-writes the mem card when full. When safe to do so, you can download the vid or pictures to your phone wirelessly using the Garmin app.....or you can take it in the house and download it old-school with a cable or card adapter. I've had it in the truck since last Christmas and it's never missed a beat from +30C to -40C.

Sounds good, Dave. Thanks for the information.

...shows location and speed in video...
I can see myself trying to swallow the ReplayXD as the officer approaches.

A little input for anyone running a V1 or similar RJ11 powered setup. As stated previously, I am using a mirror tap with RJ11 output, and a V1 on a blend mount. I've also removed the lower part (links) of the blend mount to get the detector up close to the rear view mirror. I wanted to run a dash cam that would work with this setup without running more wiring. So I decided to purchase the Escort M1 cam and a the mount kit for it from blend mount (its just a longer screw with an Allen key). This setup seems to work. When the car accessories power up, the camera and the detector power up with it and shutdown when the car is shutdown. Both seem to get enough power from the single power tap. I haven't got much time on the setup yet but so far so good. A few poor pictures in low light, with lots of reflections and a crappy iPhone camera. 1st from out side looking in the front window and then from the passenger side looking forward.
