That's debatable, I suppose. The water, floor heat, etc. is all in the slab so that doesn't qualify as indoors.

But maybe the fact that faucets, toilets and such, are indeed indoors overrides that?

WTF...now where could that have come from...
I have been thinking the same thing. Back in the day when engines had welded stamped parts like steel valve covers, that might be a source.

I have not disassembled a HC engine but I think it's all machined parts. If that is true, it came from outside the engine. Maybe there was splatter on some piece of welded tooling in the factory that got bumped, or maybe someone welded a tool or fixture near any of the engine parts at any of the sub contractors. Or even fell out of someone's sleeve, collar or glove. When you really think about it, it could have come from a lot of places.

I'm guessing every step of the mfg process from raw material to sealed engine is not conducted in a clean room.

Yeah, sometimes you wonder "Where the hell did this come from?"

My guess is that the axle housing wasn't cleaned out all that well after being machined. Thank God for magnetic level plugs. DSCN0842.JPG DSCN0845.JPG

And it had to be the one time I didn't check and change the diff fluid at 500-1,000 miles.

Oh well, catching it at about 2,000 still helped save the 3500's axle. That and a few fluid changes and many times cleaning the magnet.
