Is there a better way to change an oil filter?

Heard about putting a ziplock bag over the filter before you take it off...

With car FULLY hot and driven, I pull in, immediately drain oil from pan.

When 95% or so has drained out, I start the car for 15-30 seconds...

(Still with me?)

This empties the pump and filter as well as the cooler of most of the oil in the respective volumes...

(Swooning yet?)

Then I remove the filter and oil cooler plug, and let drain for at LEAST an hour, sometimes all afternoon...

(I know, you don't have to say it, I've had plenty of other people tell me their thoughts on my process...)

; )

Can you reach it from the top? Never tried.

Get under to loosen it, then reach down from the top and unthread it all the way, have the oil pan really close and elevated on some 2x4s or something and just drop it in after it’s unthreaded?

Hand would get dirty but obviously it can’t run down your arm at that point.

Otherwise, just take your time when unthreading the filter and let it drip like mentioned above. Totally doable, I’ve done half dozen on my Hellcats with no real issue.
The Wrangler has it horizontal, accessible from the top, much cleaner job. Not so much on the HC.

I pull the fuel pump fuse and turn over the engine to build oil pressure before every start. Doesn’t everyone do that? :ROFLMAO:

That's what I do if it hasn't been started in a week, which is often.

Can't say that I remember being bothered by oil running down outside the filter, but have noticed that much more comes out of the cooler's drain plug if removing that one before the filter.

Guess that could mean there's less in the filter afterwards. Either way, always drain all vehicles when the oil is hot, and none of them have killed or maimed me yet.

And even if I ended up with second degree burns, I'd prefer that over someone else doing the oil change.

I thought this was going to be the answer, but when the filter lets go on the last thread it overwhelms the Udder and makes a mess. Pitched it after a couple attempts.
