Can't say that I remember being bothered by oil running down outside the filter, but have noticed that much more comes out of the cooler's drain plug if removing that one before the filter.
Guess that could mean there's less in the filter afterwards. Either way, always drain all vehicles when the oil is hot, and none of them have killed or maimed me yet.
And even if I ended up with second degree burns, I'd prefer that over someone else doing the oil change.

I still prefer doing it cold. After the car has sat for many hours the oil has fully drained from the top of the engine, plus it isn't hot
